The Heroic Journey
“The journey of the hero is about the courage to seek the depths; the image of creative rebirth; the eternal cycle of change within us; the uncanny discovery that the seeker is the mystery which the seeker seeks to know.”
Joseph Campbell
The Heroic Journey in 3 Acts
-
Act 1 - Leaving Home
Every journey begins with the first step of leaving the comfort and familiarity of home. Whether external change is thrust upon her or a divine discontent pulls her, the hero embarks into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory.
-
Act 2 - The Adventure
During the adventure the hero is tested and tried, finding new gifts and talents they were unaware of or had rarely used. Eventually, she will encounter a supreme ordeal where she experiences death and rebirth (symbolically).
-
Act 3 - Achieving Mastery
Having survived the supreme ordeal, the hero finds the gift and/or the reward of her journey. The hero then returns home, but not as the same person who left but rather as a person who has achieved mastery of two worlds.
